Schools of choice applications for 2023-2024 school year
Under the Schools of Choice legislation (Section 105 and Section 105(c) of the School Aid Act), kindergarten through twelfth grade students residing within Clare Gladwin Regional Education Service District (RESD) and contiguous intermediate school districts, may apply to Harrison Community Schools for enrollment for the first semester of the 2023-2024 school year.
Application may be made for grades 6-12 with unlimited openings. Applications for grades K, 4, and 5 are being accepted with limitations, applications for grades 1, 2, and 3 are not being accepted at this time.
Applications for limited grades will be accepted from August 5, 2023 through August 19, 2023 and applicants will be notified of acceptance by August 20, 2023.
Applications for unlimited grades will be accepted until the beginning of the school year.
Enrollment must be made to the school district no later than the end of the first week of school.
Transportation for these students is the responsibility of the parents or guardians.

As we prepare to welcome our students back on August 21, we have a few more updates for you:
-- Grade-level teacher assignments for Larson will be shared as soon as possible. We are awaiting a Skyward "roll-up" with 2023-2024 information, and we do not control that timing. Once that does occur, emails will be sent to all those for whom we have an email address, and letters will be printed and mailed for all students. We believe you may also be able to see the assignment in Skyward itself once the system is updated. We cannot post lists due to federal and state privacy laws.
-- Class schedules for grades 6-12 should be available at August 16 open houses; again, printing those are dependent on the Skyward roll-up.
-- Any specific school supply lists will be posted on each school's FaceBook page and/or shared at open house. As always, we will supply any item a student does not possess.
Keep checking this space for additional updates.

Thank you to Shelly Spayd (CGRESD) for leading learning with many of our Larson teachers this week. Both new and seasoned teachers are growing their craft around scaffolding skills for our young mathematicians. #HornetPride

**UPDATED**
We are pleased to announce a new transportation partner - Auxilio Services. Already providing transportation to nearby districts, Auxilio is working with the bus staff to make a seamless transition, and on August 21, our families will see many brand new buses with "Harrison Community Schools" on their sides.
If your child is a new enrollee in Harrison Community Schools, or was a student last year but did not ride the bus, please print and complete the attached form below to register for transportation in the 2023-2024 school year. IF YOUR CHILD RODE THE BUS LAST YEAR, AND THERE ARE NO CHANGES you do not need to fill out a form.
Registration forms are available and will be accepted in our central office (old Hillside) through Tuesday, August 1, and then also in our school offices beginning on August 2. They may be dropped off in person or faxed. Forms DO NOT go to the bus garage. Our fax number is 989.539.7491.

As families may be pulling together clothes for the first day of school and beyond, here is a graphic to help understand our new dress code (previously shared). It displays the MINIMUMS for tops and bottoms.

Harrison 2023 graduate Malea Gardner played in the MHSSCA All Star Game on Wednesday, July 19th. She had a single in the game. She is the third Hornet to play in this all star game (Hillary Brewer in 2012 and Allison Lipovsky in 2015). Way to represent Hornet Nation Malea!!

With a small group, we launched our first HCS/Business Community Lunch & Roundtable today. We had representatives from a variety of fields, including construction, retail, finance, health/medical, city government, insurance, and education. We discussed employment hiring trends and needs, potential skill gaps with new hires, and ways in which we might come together to collaboratively and positively impact the future stories of our students and the greater Harrison community. The conversations were rich, and the energy was high!
Now that we know there is an "appetite" for this endeavor, we are ready and excited to enlarge the group. If a representative of your business would like to join our next lunch/roundtable discussion, tentatively scheduled for October (day TBD), please email our superintendent at juwalton@harrisonschools.com. #HornetNation #HornetPride

Our first day of learning with students is Monday, August 21, and it is a full day. If you need to enroll your child in grades K-12, you can submit the paperwork now at our administration building (old Hillside Elementary) Monday through Thursday, 6:00 am through 4:00 pm.

Harrison Community Schools is looking to hire a Pre-School Teacher and a Pre-School Paraprofessional for our Great Start Readiness program. Please see postings for job requirements and application information

Good morning, Hornet Nation! After last week's upgrade to our telephone server, some of us in the district administrative office are hitting snags in retrieving our voicemail messages. We appreciate your patience as we get the bugs worked out this morning - we will retrieve and respond to your voicemails as soon as possible.

Please be advised that we are updating our telephone server today. This may cause some random but brief outages throughout the day. Connected calls may drop and incoming/outgoing calls will fail. Thank you for your patience.

If you're looking for some fun science ideas to do with your child this summer, look no further! The ideas were provided by Richard Byrne, a tech teacher in Maine. Once you have the document open, the hyperlinks will be accessible.

Jack Pine Conference Press Release:
The Jack Pine Conference has a long-standing tradition of promoting excellence in academics, sportsmanship and athletics and we are excited to expand and extend that tradition with the addition of four new member schools: Bullock Creek, Ogemaw Heights, St. Louis and Standish-Sterling high schools.
These four schools will be joining the JPC starting in the 2024-25 school year and will undoubtedly help elevate the Jack Pine Conference to new heights. This addition will not only enhance the conference's overall strength but will also foster an environment of healthy competition, collaboration and camaraderie among our schools and communities.
"We are delighted to welcome Bullock Creek, Ogemaw Heights, St. Louis and Standish-Sterling to the Jack Pine Conference,” said Jack Kramer, JPC Commissioner. “Their dedication to academics, athletics and sportsmanship aligns well with our core values and we are confident that their participation will further enrich the conference and benefit all member schools."
Starting in the 2024-25 school year the JPC will become a two divisions one champion conference. With this move the JPC hopes to create a more competitive schedule for all member schools throughout their seasons while still having one conference champion, in each sport, to keep the long-standing connections within the conference strong. Specific names for the two divisions are yet to be determined as we hope to gather input from our new member schools.
Jack Pine Conference 2024-25:
Bullock Creek, Clare, Gladwin, Ogemaw Heights, Shepherd, and Standish Sterling; Beaverton, Farwell, Harrison, Meridian, Pinconning, and St. Louis.

Enjoy!
