Harrison Community Schools are closed today. Our back roads are impassable for buses, and paved roads are slick.

**UPDATE:**

I am sending this via email, our app, and on social media, as I did the first letter.

HCS Families,

Our law enforcement partners interviewed the person who launched this issue on social media. What they were able to find out is that the alleged event took place "a few months ago." The person would not provide law enforcement with the name of the student, as he believes the student "accidentally" brought the firearm to school. In addition, officers were provided with no evidence of the event occurring. I am disclosing nothing confidential - all of that is part of a public police report.

Out of an abundance of caution, the sheriff's department facilitated a bag and locker check in the middle school and high school this morning as students were entering. Myself and multiple other administrators and staff members assisted them. Your children were incredibly cooperative, and we found nothing.

Again, if you have any questions, please reach out to me.

Good morning,

I know this week has been frustrating with the weather. You are anxious to get your kids back to learning, and our staff feels the same way. We really miss them!

This morning, we did hope the delay would help road conditions improve, especially as the temperature increased. Unfortunately, as both the bus director and I drove different parts of the district again between 6:30 am and 7:35 am, secondary and back roads in the Arnold Lake area, Long Lake area, Leota, and Dodge City were still not good at all. In addition, even some roads closer to town, specifically Temple, Harrison, and Townline had some issues, too.

As I outlined in my November 21 Scoop with the Supe video, we're not going to place our kids at risk if the roads are not safe for buses to travel on. While some of your neighborhoods or areas may be safe, too many others are not. Bad January weather is not unprecedented -- back in 2019, I think, most schools in Michigan were out for a whole week due to ice and the polar vortex.

I am cautiously optimistic that we will be in school tomorrow, as I look at the forecast. Also, please remember that in our school calendar, Friday is already slotted as a half day for students because it is the end of Semester 1. During the afternoon, teachers will be working on grading and entering report card data. Semester 2 begins next Monday.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or your school principal.

In partnership,
Judy Walton, Superintendent

Schools tend to celebrate the end of a school year, not the calendar year. But we've got a lot to be proud of in 2025!
