A message from our amazing partners at Chartwells: 1. Thank you so much for the incredible turnout for our meal distribution yesterday!! We were able to provide meals for SO many kids, even more than we were expecting! 2. With such an amazing response, we found ourselves a little short this first week, and we apologize to any family that made the trip up to the school and didn’t receive their meals. We kept track of those missed to have a better idea of participation for next week. 3. PLEASE come back next week! We are adjusting our numbers in order to fulfill the community's needs and we can’t wait to see you again.

On June 19, 1865, over 250,000 enslaved people in Galveston TX finally received the news of their emancipation, marking a milestone in American history. Following the end of the Civil War, Juneteenth celebrations emerged as a tradition ; the date was formally recognized as a federal holiday in 2021. This recognition is an acknowledgment that Juneteenth represents America as a nation deeply committed to the principles of human freedom and equality.

As promised, we are sharing information for any student or other person who may need support due to the passing of Mrs. Swartout. The loss of a teacher, friend, colleague, or relative is a tragic event. Because it is the suppression (not expression) of feelings that may be harmful, we are here to listen and support the processing of any and all emotions. All this week, we have counselors and/or social workers available in the high school, from 8:00 am through 2:00 pm. You may just show up in person, you may call 989.539.7417 to speak with someone by telephone, or you may use that same number to set up a virtual meeting. For anyone needing support beyond this week, please use the same number to request support. Visitation for Mrs. Swartout is on Saturday, June 14, from 10:00 am through 1:00 pm, at the Clark-Stocking Funeral Home. The service will follow at 1:00 pm.

Hornet Nation, It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of teacher Stacey Swartout. Over the course of the school year, Mrs. Swartout waged a fierce battle against pancreatic cancer. The determination and grit she brought to that fight was the same determination and grit she brought every day to support the learning of our students. While with Hornet Nation for six years, Mrs. Swartout spent a total of twenty-five years as a special education teacher, dedicating her life to helping others. Counselors and/or social workers will be available in the high school this coming week to support students and staff members. We will be sharing a schedule early tomorrow morning. While Hornet Nation mourns this loss, it is obviously much more difficult for the Swartout family. Please hold Quincy Swartout, daughter and HHS interventionist, in your thoughts, as well as all family and friends. Judy Walton Superintendent

Teaching is both an art and a science. Most of the time in college or university is spent on learning the science of teaching; the art begins in the heart and grows with every experience. #teacherappreciationweek
