TRIP TO QUANTICO, VIRGINIA

On the morning of Monday, May 26th, 24 students in Harrison High Schools Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps were starting their summer vacation with an early wake up. They were to leave the High School at seven AM for an orientation trip to Quantico, Virginia. Due to a slight transportation mix up, they departed on their 13 hour trip at five PM and arrived in Quantico at 8:45AM on Tuesday, May 27th. After settling into their rooms at Harper Hall, the cadets visited the National Museum of Marine Corps History where they were able to see the second flag raised on Iwo Jima, different planes that were once flown in combat, and watch short movies about the Marine Corps and how the different battles and wars they have fought in affected themselves, the loved ones back home, and even the economy.

The following day everyone ate a light breakfast, they were headed to the Marine base in Quantico to do some physical training. After splitting into two groups and doing their daily stretches the cadets went for a three mile run on an endurance trail. At the end of the run, all of the cadets knew why the 'Yellow Brick Road' is held in such high esteem, it was a section of the course painted yellow that was rocky, rough, steep, and one heck of a workout. After a half hour of sit ups, push ups, and jumping jacks, the students ate chow and headed to the firing range.

On the range, everyone was instructed on range safety, the first rule; 'Every weapon should be treated as if it is loaded.' was drilled into their heads. They were then split into different groups, the first group took the firing line with their own coach (a member of the Marine Corps Rifle Team) and shot M-16 A2's, the second group headed down to the butts where they marked the targets being shot at (the students were below the targets in a man made dugout, to insure their safety). As a souvenir for their first time on a Marine firing range, each cadet was allowed to take home one casing from a round that had been shot. When the bus full of students arrived back to their rooms, they were able to hang out and relax in the rec. room where they could play video games, watch television, and play an intense game of pool.

Thursday was by far the most busy day of the week. The first stop of the day took the well behaved students and chaperone, Sue Cuvelier to the Arlington National Cemetery. The group was able to witness the changing of guards at the Tomb of the Unknowns, take a walk through the 'Custis-Lee Mansion' or Arlington House, and see the Eternal Flame at former President, John F. Kennedy's grave. The next stop was Washington D.C! Ten students were lucky enough to be offered free tickets to go up in the Washington Monument. The view was amazing and stretched approximately 30-40 miles out. The next stop was the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the students had only ever seen 'The Wall' in photographs and were surprised to see just how many people had given their lives to ensure that we are safe. From there, the cadets followed Msgt. Carlstrom and Maj. Spurlock to the Lincoln Memorial where they saw the amazing Reflection Pool glittering in the afternoon sun and the 175 ton, 19 ft. tall statue of our 16th President Abraham Lincoln. The group also visited the Jefferson Memorial and National World War II Memorial. The last stop of the day was in front of the White House. Here, most of the students came face to face with the first protestors they have ever seen. The day ended with a time to relax around the pool and a couple games of pool basketball and cards.

The 24 students, two teachers, and chaperone all agreed that this whole experience was an amazing one. For many, it was a first and maybe a last chance that was worth the early morning wake ups and crazy room partners. The trip was a total blow out and could not have gone any smoother.    On  the first of December, Harrison High School held its annual Toys for Tots game.  The high school faculty versed Marines who traveled from the recruiting station in Lansing Michigan.  With the two teams head to head at half time, Harrison's own Varsity and J.V Cheerleaders gathered all of the children in the stands and sang Jingle Bells together.  At that note Mr. & Mrs. Clause made an  appearance and handed out goody bags to all of the good boys and girls.  There was also a pull up competition put on by the Marines that took place.  The game ended in a Harrison Victory.  All of the toys and money collected is being donated to our local Toys for Tots Foundation.

The 2007 Marine Corp Birthday Ball

On the evening of the eighth of November, the Harrison High School Marine Corps J.R.O.T.C held
its annual Marine Corps Ball. This Ball was held to celebrate the Marine Corps’ 232 Birthday, which occurred on the 10th of November. The night's events started off with our country's national anthem, a reading of the Commandant's Message by Cadet Aaron Mclearan, a memorandum video made by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, and a guest speaker, former Marine and Post Commander of VFW Post 1075, Mr. Rick Carothers.

Following these events was the cutting of the beautiful birthday cake. The tradition of cutting the cake is that the oldest Marine at the event eats the first piece, and the second piece is eaten
by the youngest Marine. This year’s recipients of the two pieces of cake were Mr. Rick Carothers and Cadet Tiffany Shedron. After a wonderfully prepared meal and some Kenny G. drifting throughout the air, all guests and cadets were able to relax and visit with each other. The ending to this perfect evening was everybody showing off their best moves. The nights events went wonderfully and could not have been planned out any better. Happy Birthday Marine Corps!

DRILL COMPETITION AT CAMP GRAYLING

On October 26th, 14 cadets from the Harrison High School Marine Corps J.R.O.T.C's program traveled to Camp Grayling. The students entered into a competition with Navy R.O.T.C's from Flint Central, Ogemaw Heights, and White Cloud. The competition consisted of a P.R.C., 50 question test over drill, orienteering spread, and a Color Guard competition.

When first arriving at Camp Grayling, cadets from Ogemaw Heights greeted the contestants from Harrison and showed them to their barracks where they bunked for the night. Starting the evening events was a test. This test was made up of 50 questions about drill pulled right from the Marine Corps J.R.O.T.C hand book. 10 cadets from each school were put on an academic team to compete in this brain buster.

Following this bout was the orienteering spread.  Representing Harrison were 2 teams; team 1: A. Dorman, A. Bower, M. Torr, and C. Carpenter. Team 2: D. Sexton, C. Dorman, R. Taylor, and M. Renolds.

Running to the next event was the P.R.C. The object was to get as many male push-ups possible in 2 minutes, 1 minute later you pushed yourself to the brink aiming for as many sit-ups possible. After doing this, the teams competed in a relay, every member had to run 50 yards and pass off the baton to the person ahead of them.

The next morning everyone was headed for West Branch where the Color Guard competition took place.  The LEI team was made up of N. Avery, D. Heintzelman, T. Shedron, and T. Allen, this team placed second out of four!  The upperclassmen color guard group consisted of R. Taylor, C. Dorman, D. Sexton, and M. Torr, the team did a very nice job.

Guiding all the cadets who came for this experience was Master Sergeant Carlstrom and Major Spurlock.  This was a learning experience for all the cadets and is already being looked forward to for next fall!

CADET ATTENDS MICH. FREEDOM ACADEMY

On June 24th the JROTC program sent one cadet to the Michigan Freedom Academy in Alpena.  The VFW very generously covered the cost for the cadet to go.  At the academy we were divided into flights or teams in which we worked together to accomplish our goals.  The counselors taught us how to be more efficient leaders and how to work as part of a team.  We met the famous Tuskegee airmen who talked about their ordeals during WWII.  Then when the airmen were getting ready for departure we went out onto the flight line and saluted them as they rolled on by.  The delegates also went through a physical fitness challenge and participated in laser tag, they went through a raft race that consisted of their flight or team that lasted a little over an hour as well.  All the delegates went through a writing contest and a speech contest too.  In the end all the delegates graduated and said goodbye to their new friends and counselors as they heard towards home.
