Dear Parents,

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL

Many families have asked when the last day of school is. Due to the 11 snow days, Harrison Community Schools has extended their school day for the elementary buildings only and made changes to the calendar for all buildings to meet the state requirement of 1098 hours.

The changes are as follows:

Friday, May 23rd will be a day off for students and staff.
Tuesday, May 27th will be a full day of school.
Wednesday, May 28th will be a half day for students and a full day for staff. This will be the last day of school for the 2007/2008 school year.

NOTE: Tuesday, May 27th is Larson’s Fun Day! Please make sure your students are in school on both days as fun activities and end of the year assessment occur.

BEHAVIOR ISSUES

The staff at Larson Elementary has seen an increase in student behavior and misconduct. It has been decided starting Monday, May 5, 2008 that every student who is sent to the office will miss one fun day event for every office referral. There are 14 events on Fun Day. If your child looses all events, we will ask that you keep your child at home that day.

Severe: If your child displays severe and consistent behavior parents will be contacted regarding not participating on Fun Day.

The next PTO meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 10th at 10:00 a.m. at Larson.

TRACK AND FIELD DAY

The Track and Field Day is scheduled for May 19th. The starting times for each grade level are below:

9:40 a.m.- Second Grade
11:20 a.m.- First Grade
1:00 p.m.- Kindergarten

In the event that we are rained out the track and field events will be rescheduled for Thursday, May 22 at the same times. Please make sure that your children are wearing tennis shoes on these days.

FIVE FUN THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR CHILD THIS WEEK!

1. May 7-11 is Teacher Appreciation Week. Encourage your child to write a thank you to their teacher.
2. See the school calendar for end-of-the year activities.
3. Make sure your child eats a good breakfast.
4. Together, make a list of the jobs that need to be done around the house. Make a job chart to share the work.
Celebrate Be Kind to Animals Week. Do something nice for your family pet…… or feed the birds in your yard.

LOST AND FOUND – If your child is missing any articles of clothing, please check our lost and found. We have a lot of clothing on the rack.

PARENTS AND VISITORS MUST REPORT TO THE OFFICE!! It is imperative that anyone entering the building report to the office. This rule is for your child’s safety and will be actively enforced.

EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM

Do you have a child who will be 4 years of age on/or before December 1, 2008? Registration for the Early Childhood Program through Harrison Community Schools will begin April 8th. You may pick up registration forms at the Larson Elementary Office. For more information call 989-539-3259

CLASSROOM PLACEMENT FOR 2008

Each spring the principal and the teachers work together to provide the best possible placement for all children for the following school year. We strive to create classes that are compatible and heterogeneous based on: academic range, special education needs, learning styles and needs, gender balance, class size, and behavioral/personality mix. Parent placement consideration forms will be taken into consideration when making placement and other decisions about each child.

When filling out the forms, please make two teacher selections that you can live with for your child. Only requests with two choices will be considered. If you request a teacher, and that teacher leaves the position, your child will be assigned to the new teacher. If a request can not be accommodated, another teacher will be assigned. Forms are due May 16th.

BULLYING AT SCHOOL

Bullying means teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting and stealing towards another person. Bullying at Larson Elementary will not be tolerated. If bullying continues after a student has been warned and asked to stop, then the student has chosen to go home. Our goal is to be a safe and happy school where learning and social growth is a positive experience for your child.

Toys at School

Please remind your child to keep their toys at home, unless it is show and tell day. We have many students bringing toys to school and playing with them when they should be working. The toys are also a distraction to the class. Any toys that are brought to school will be given to Ms. Rosekrans. Parents can pick the toys up from Ms. Rosekrans.

PULL TAB UPDATE

Our grand total this school year for Larson Elementary is 127,077 tabs. The money from these is used to help families who need to stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Toledo, Ohio. We will be collecting again next year so please continue to save tabs over the summer.
