BUSINESS DEPARTMENT

 

Students who enroll in business classes can look forward to having the skills employers are seeking. Upon completion of the business curriculum, students could look forward to being employed in the following areas: Office Assistant, Office Specialist, Medical/ Legal Specialist, Information Processing Assistant/Specialist, Administrative Assistant, Data Assistant, Data Specialist, Banking Specialist, Computer Aided Design, Computer Assistant, Graphic Arts and Business Management.

Computer I Introduction to Computers
One trimester long, 1/2 credit

This introductory computer course is available to all students in grades 9-12. However, students are encouraged to take this course early in their high school career. This course is a prerequisite to Computers II. Students will create and format documents such as:  business letters, memos, reports, tables, outlines, and flyers. There will be projects assigned involving the creation of documents using software such as MS Word, MS Publisher, MS PowerPoint, and the Internet.

Computer II Manipulation and Presentation Software (M.A.P.S.)
One trimester long, 1/2 credit
Prerequisite: Computer I

This is a project driven course in which students will create and manipulate business documents using MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, MS PowerPoint, and MS Publisher. Students also create a portfolio of their work that will be used throughout high school to demonstrate their accomplishments and creativity in all curricular areas. Extensive attention is given to creating a resume and completing career exploration projects. This course will be conducted in an online format and will satisfy the online learning experience requirement.

Internet & Web Essentials
One trimester long, 1/2 credit
9th - 12th Grades

Prerequisite: Computer I

This is a project driven course designed to help students appropriately and effectively use the Internet. Students will learn such things as: search engines, trip planning tools, different research strategies, e-mail, Internet terminology, bookmark management, browsers, and
distinguishing sources. Time will also be spent identifying ethical issues (i.e., plagiarism, illegal downloading, fair use and copyright guidelines) as they relate to the Internet and technology.

General Business
2 Trimesters long, 1 full credit

Students will learn about their roles as consumer, worker, and citizen in today’s world. Topics covered include different economies, international business, insurance needs, banking, credit, housing, consumer protection, preparation of income tax forms, computing payroll, buying/leasing a car, ethics, and etc. Additional time is spent examining careers in the areas of management, economics, service occupations, banking, finance, human resources, and technology. Students will use the Internet for research projects and may use MS PowerPoint presentation software and other software applications for projects and presentations.

Accounting
2 Trimesters long, 1 full credit

This course is designed to provide students with the skills basic to the accounting department of a small business. Topics of study include double-entry accounting, preparing journals, ledgers, payroll, depreciation, interest, and financial reports for small businesses.

Business and Technology (BAT I)
2 Trimesters long, 1 full credit
Prerequisite: Computer II

This course is project driven. Students will use different software applications (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, MS PowerPoint, MS Publisher, and MS FrontPage) to create business solutions for their projects. Soft skills such as telephone skills, oral and verbal communication skills, problem solving skills, and career exploration will be introduced. Students will use different forms of technology (i.e., scanners, digital cameras, internet) when creating publications for their projects. Students in this class are encouraged to get involved in Business Professionals of America. Students may also get credit on the Office Information Systems Program (Associate’s Degree) at Mid-Michigan Community College by taking this class and passing a competency test at MMCC.

Management Support
(JUNIORS & SENIORS)
Open to 11th Gr. students and  fulfills the graduation computer literacy requirement
2 Trimesters long, 1 full credit
 

Management support is an advanced course utilizing all types of business skills. Emphasis is on office skills, telephone procedures, workflow and office design, records management, creation and usage of business forms, tables, reports, time management skills, business math, and employability skills. Students use MS PowerPoint to create and offer presentations on various business topics. Students in this class are encouraged to get involved in Business Professionals of America. Students may also get credit on the Office Information Systems Program (Associate’s Degree) at Mid-Michigan Community College by taking this class and passing a competency test at MMCC.
