Week in Review

Partnership with CMU

Hillside is very fortunate once again to partner with Central Michigan University for a research study.  A few years ago, we partnered with CMU do to a research study on effective vocabulary instruction.

Our new research study will focus on young people’s attitudes and perceptions. On Thursday, we sent home an information packet that explains the study in detail.  Please fill out that information and return it to school no later than Wednesday January 27.  Also included in the packet is a permission slip for your child to participate in the study.  If you do not want your child to participate, we still need the permission slip back.  Students will participate in a pre-test next Thursday to gather their perceptions.  Our class has been selected to have students from CMU come in to do several interventions with us to help change our perceptions. Students will then take a post-test to see if the interventions changed their perceptions.

Thank-you for filling out the information and returning it to us quickly.  Students who return their packets filled out will receive a prize next Thursday!

Spelling Homework did not go home last week because I had a deal with the class that if their exaggerations were awesome, I would excuse them from homework. They were wonderful!

This week we will work with the suffix –ly.  We will also work with compound words.

We will have a cloze test on Wednesday and a skills test on Friday!

Students will continue to check for priority words as they are writing.

Hillside’s greatest area of need is Writing.

Our exaggerations were wonderful.  I had a good laugh as I read them.

Our focus will be grammar this week.  We will take a closer look at colons and commas this week.

We will play with idioms on Friday.

Students will have a revising lesson.  We will continue to work on proofreading and editing our writing.

Writing workshop will focus on our historical fiction piece for the next few weeks.

Reading

Reading Homework comes home on Monday! We will take a break from genre studies this week.  This week we will work with the comprehension strategy inference.

On Friday, we will review text structures.

We will continue our work with decimals, fractions, and percents this week.  We will work with story problems as well.  Students will work in small groups on Tuesday.  We will review this unit on Thursday and have a quiz on Friday.

Science

This week we will wrap up our study of the body systems.  How are all the body systems connected and how do they depend on each other?  This week we will find out the answer to this question.

If time on Thursday, we will head to the computer lab.

Social Studies

We will begin our study of Colonial America.  We will focus first on three of the first English colonies.  We will take a closer look at the Lost Colony of Roanke, Jamestown, and Plymouth.

Students will learn the fate of these colonies and what contributed to their success or failure.
