NOVEMBER

"Aunt Sally" will arrive in good fashion, helping the students learn how to solve problems using the Order of Operations.  Ask your student(s) if they can explain PEMDAS.  This prompts logical mathematical problem solving; it's necessary for there to be ONE specific order in which to solve problems,

Fractions, fractions and more fractions.  What's NOT to like?!  The students will be working hard on using mathematical operations (add, sub, div, mult) with fractions in order to solve problems.

As the students make their way through their first several lessons, they will also begin covering the state grade level expectations.  Some will be more challenging and some less challenging, but they will periodically be reminded that the lessons should have some challenge to them or it would be considered 5th grade work. :o)

OCTOBER

1)  MEAP Testing:  10/14,  10/16,  10/21,  10/23.

2)  By the end of the month the students should have completed approximately the first 10 to 15 lessons from our Saxon Math series.  After the MEAP testing is finished they will be having a quiz, test or assessment(s) approx. every 5 lessons and an in-class, hands-on, investigation type assignment after every 10 lessons.

3)   The students will be working on specific standards at different times throughout the trimesters, however, because they are working primarily from the Saxon series, many standards are reviewed in EVERY lesson.  The book is set up with 30 problems for each lesson, and although a new concept is concentrated on in each lesson, the 30 problems will have some from that current lesson and the remainder are from any previous lessons.  This is to help students retain any concepts previously taught.  As a result, many standards are covered in every set of problems.  It's great for the kids, as long as they keep up with their assignments.
