Minutes of Special Meeting of the Harrison Board of Education
August 7, 2008

President Joel Hardy called the regular meeting of the Harrison Board of Education to order at 7:00 p.m. in the Board/Conference Room located at 224 West Main Street.
Members present: Floyd Dennis, Denise Haskin, Connie Cauchi Marie Roth, Therese Haley, Doug Cobb, and Joel Hardy.
Members absent: None
Others present: Interim Superintendent Thomas House, Kelly Hileman, Business Manager and Tammy Harcourt, Recorder.
President Hardy led the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

The board approved the following change to the agenda: II. Action Items: letter a; change wording to “President Hardy is pleased to recommend”.

Vice President Cobb asked to discuss the recommendation of appointing Thomas House to Superintendent before making a motion. Treasurer Roth commented on the timing of it being brought up now when it was shut down at the June board meeting. Secretary Haskin stated that she made the motion to bring MASB on board and proceed with the process of the search before she knew Tom House would be a candidate. Trustee Haley stated that she had suggested placing Mr. House as interim for 6 months or so then see how it goes. She then asked Mr. Hardy why the change of heart? President Hardy indicated he had been contacted independently by members of the Board to make the recommendation.
Motion by Haskin and supported by Cobb to accept President Hardy’s recommendation to hire Thomas J. House and the Superintendent. Yeas: Cobb, Haskin, Hardy. Nays: Dennis, Cauchi, Haley and Roth. Motion denied.

Motion by Cobb and supported by Roth to accept the Interim Superintendent’s recommendation to hire BARB ELLIOTT as Hillside Elementary Principal. Yeas: Cobb, Haskin, Hardy, Dennis, Cauchi, Haley, Roth and Hardy. Motion carried.

President Hardy asked if anyone would like to address the Board at this time. Anne Smith stated she has lived her for 52 years and feels it’s a terrible tragedy not to give the Superintendent’s job to Thomas House. Marion Hileman stated she has been through a lot of Superintendents and is in total support of hiring Tom House to fill the position and wanted to remind the board you are representing all tax payers and not a handful of their buddies. Barb Richards emphasized that she is passionate about this district. You cannot find a better superintendent that Tom House. She also asked the board if it was discussed before hand. She told the Board they have to get over their pettiness and move forward. Dave Rowe stated that he worked for Tom and he would be the best candidate for the job. Roger Taylor asked to see a list of qualifications for the position. Stated that Tom had all of them and he is embedded in this district. Amy Romanowski stated that they should stop, prorate what we owe MASB and hire Tom. Also, asked if Therese worked for David McAndrew. Lisa Rutledge stated that she was disappointed that Therese didn’t bring it up and abstain from voting on that particular candidate. Kelly Taylor stated that they keep saying they have to follow rules, but Therese didn’t let people know that she worked for Dave McAndrew. Richard Harris stated he has worked for this district for 39 years and found Tom House to be a straight forward man. Shannon Olstrom stated that everyone on the Board is good people, stop fighting and look what’s best for kids. Raye Lynn Walraven stated that she respects Tom House so much, he’s trustworthy and respectful.
Motion by Cobb and supported by Haskin to adjourn the meeting at 8:55 p.m. Yeas: Dennis, Cauchi, Haley, Roth, Haskin, Cobb and Hardy. Nays: None. Motion carried.
