Minutes of Organizational Meeting of the Harrison Board of Education
January 14, 2008

President Joel Hardy called the regular meeting of the Harrison
Board of Education to order at 7:00 pm in the Board/Conference Room located at 224 West Main Street. Members present: David Rowe, Raye Lynn Walraven, Karen Zaborowski, Shelly Schultz, Denise Haskin, Marie Roth and Joel Hardy. Members absent: None Others present: Superintendent Christopher Rundle, Kelly Hileman, Business Manager and Recorder Tammy Harcourt. President Hardy led the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. There were no additions to be added to the agenda. Motion by Rowe and supported by Zaborowski to approve the minutes for December 10, 2007 as presented. Yeas: Rowe, Walraven, Zaborowski, Roth, Schultz, Haskin and Hardy. Nays: None. Motion carried. Motion by Walraven and supported by Haskin to approve General Fund checks as listed for the period December 11, 2007 through January 14, 2008. Yeas: Walraven, Zaborowski, Roth, Schultz, Haskin, Rowe and Hardy. Nays: None. Motion carried. Motion by Zaborowski and supported by Rowe to approve the financial reports for the General Fund, 1998 and 1999 Debt Retirement Funds. Yeas: Zaborowski, Roth, Schultz, Haskin, Rowe, Walraven and Hardy. Nays: None. Motion carried. At this time there have been no committee meetings to date to report on. Superintendent Rundle and President Hardy, recognized two community members and two members of the Pine River Community who performed life saving CPR on a Harrison women on the night of December 20, 2007 at a Girls Basketball game. They presented Jim Cooper, Athletic Director, Lucy Bohr, School Liaison Officer, Shawn Ruppert, Pine River resident and Dorise Koeji also of Pine River, with the “Harrison Board of Education Life Saving Award”. Sheriff Jeff Goyt also awarded them with a plaque from the Sheriff’s Department. Bob O’Dell from the RESD Middle College gave a brief presentation on the progress of the Middle College courses. Superintendent Rundle presented each Board Member with a certificate and a small gift for School Board Appreciation Month. Superintendent Rundle thanked the Board for always keeping their focus on student achievement even during the tough times. Motion by Rowe and supported by Haskin to accept the resignation to of Richard Spangler, Middle School Math Teacher effective June 30, 2008. Yeas: Rowe, Haskin, Schultz, Roth, Zaborowski, Walraven and Hardy. Nays: None. Motion carried. Motion by Rowe and supported by Zaborowski to adopt a resolution in accordance with the provisions of Section 38 of the State School Aid Act, whereas Harrison Community Schools certifies that it will provide preschool education for 64 eligible four-year old children, and that $217,600 of the state amount based on the approved per capita allowance of $3,400 will be used specifically for the purpose. Harrison Community Schools further certifies that more that fifty percent of the children enrolled in the school readiness program will meet the income eligibility guidelines outlined in Section 32d and 37 through 40. Yeas: Rowe, Schultz, Haskin, Zaborowski, Walraven, Roth and Hardy. Nays: None. Motion carried. Third Grade teacher, Amy Romanowski asked the board’s permission to take the 3rd graders on a class trip by charter bus to Mackinac City with a stop at Hartwick Pines and a ferry trip to Mackinac Island. Motion by Rowe and supported by Walraven to approve the 3rd grade trip to Hartwick Pines, Mackinac City and Mackinac Island on Monday, May 19th. Yeas: Zaborowski, Roth, Schultz, Haskin, Rowe, Walraven and Hardy. Nays: None. Motion carried. Motion by Walraven and supported by Zaborowski to approve a Resolution and accept the settlement offer from the National Fire Insurance Company of Hartford for damages on both the high school and middle school gym floors. This will give the go ahead with the replacement of the middle school gym floor and fixing the high school gym floor. Yeas: Roth, Schultz, Haskin, Rowe, Walraven, Zaborowski and Hardy. Nays: None. Motion carried. At this time President Hardy asked if there was anyone who wished to address the Board. Barb Richards just wanted to inform the Board on the upcoming Governor Summit in Lansing. She stated that it was the best informational day spent and asked any and all Board members to consider attending. Superintendent Rundle reminded the Board on the Generation Next
presentation on February 15th. Motion by Rowe and supported by Zaborowski to adjourn the
meeting. Yeas: Walraven, Zaborowski, Roth Schultz, Haskin, Rowe and
